Concept of the Work
One day, I saw a heap of flowers that had been pulled from a corner of the grounds at a gardening store I used to frequent. They had lost their commercial value and were discarded in a pile.
Despite that, the gathered plants still displayed vivid colors. Their tangled stems and roots remained fresh, and the moisture and light in the air made it seem as if they were still breathing.
Where does withering begin in a plant, and when does it start to die?
I wonder about that pile of flowers from back then,
the cut flowers left to linger in vases,
the bright chrysanthemums at the corner of the cemetery,
and the weeds pulled from the edges of the fields.
At what point are they alive, and when are they not?
The boundary between life and death in plants is very blurred—fluid, shifting, and sometimes overlapping.
Part of a plant may be dead, yet another part may still be undeniably alive.
What I had once considered “dead” may not have been so at all.
